Usually I don’t really read many articles from WND, a conservative news source, but you do sometimes find those needle in the haystack articles that get you thinking. The article in question is of the BSA’s decision. If you take a gander at it, you might feel outraged, like I did when I read it, but you may not know for what yet. I thought I was outraged because of the boycott against them, nope. I thought I was outraged because they gave up their stance, nope. I thought, then, that I was outraged because their stance is antiquated and leaves room for hypocrisy, nope. So, then I asked myself, why are you so mad!?
One, the BSA is an organization there to service the children, our future generation. They should not have allowed anyone and/or anything to pervert that, that includes executives and/or management. In their stupor, they force out a mother because she part of the “new normal” and does not fit in their reputation or views of what family should be like. Because of their lost in focus, they have allowed their ego, prejudice and bigotry to stand in the way of servicing their chapter and the kids. Now, troupes of Eagle scouts seems to have come in droves to give “their hard-earned regalia, with more than 200 posting their letters and photos of their medals, pins or certificates to a tumblr page,” which was started by Burke Stansbury, a communication specialist in Seattle. I believe that those regalia’s meant something to these scouts but they were willing to part ways with them to show support for that mom. She was no rapist, molester, nor an extremist. She was just a mom who loves her son, wanted to take part and give back. What’s wrong with that!?
Two, the activist(s) that went after the organization because of their own sense of justice, should have looked at what effect this will have on the kids not the adults. Going after the money, by attacking the donors, may be seen as a smart move or gesture but to me the ones getting hurt are not the leaders but the children. The less discretionary funds an organization has the less it spends and the less activities it will do, especially for a non-profit. For profit companies always look at what they can cut to maximize their profits and though you may have one the fight the battle may have been lost. Who, knows if these organizations will reinstate their donations to the BSA, after this reversal, and if they do, will the donations return to the previous levels, before the attrition?
An example that comes to mind is the Montgomery bus boycott of the transportation system by Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Ralph Abernathy, which caused great harm to the industry then and forced their hand in equalizing the industry, especially the greater part of their profits and/funds came from the African-American community. This was done because it was a public system but those who are part of the public, the African-American, were being discriminated against and treated differently, due to their race, even though they paid for the service. However, this was in effect a fight between adults, kids were not affected.
Three, there are evil people whom are straight, gay, bi, transgendered and/or all the above. Sexual orientation is not a definition for perversion, conversion or just plain evil. Boys Scouts Of America should have known that there are devout Christians, whom are gay, bi, transgendered and have strong, if not stronger, moral standards and leadership abilities. Being gay, bi or transgendered should not and cannot disqualify someone from having spirituality, dreams, aspirations, love, hope, faith, a family, church, or being in a church, and a strong sense of duty regards to God, family and church.
Something stood out to me and I hope it does to you as well. The article stated that the organization was against having “homosexuals”, well openly gay, in leadership positions but nowhere did it say that they were against families who were not “normal”, in their eyes, from having their kids take part of scouts.
I borrowed this from the scouts’ website, which states:
The Boy Scouts of America takes great pride in the quality of our adult leadership. Being a leader in the BSA is a privilege, not a right. The quality of the program and the safety of our youth members call for high-quality adult leaders. We work closely with our chartered organizations to help recruit the best possible leaders for their units.
The adult application requests background information that should be checked by the unit committee or the chartered organization before accepting an applicant for unit leadership. While no current screening techniques exist that can identify every potential child molester, we can reduce the risk of accepting a child molester by learning all we can about an applicant for a leadership position—his or her experience with children, why he or she wants to be a Scout leader, and what discipline techniques he or she would use.”
This, to me at least, sounds like this can apply to anyone who is either gay, straight, bi, transgendered. It just took one, or maybe a few, who are in power whithin the organization, to twist that charter’s message into meaning that this charter was referring to somebody who is heterosexual, which I do not see anywhere, even in the spirit of it. If anything, I would have gone after people not the organization, since its charter does not call for segregation of people by sexual orientation but the one in leading positions do, so go after them.
Nonetheless, this is my tit-bit in this ordeal. Some of these points, main points, were the source of my outrage because in all of them, nobody thought of the kids but everybody, to me, was out defending or attacking for their own cause and/or what they believe to be their cause. Please do leave your thought on the matter as well.
